Mary White, known to most of us as “Miss Mary,” retired from the Johns Hopkins Hospital after more than 45 years of service. Miss Mary began her employment with the Hospital in 1966. She was initially hired as a patient escort, and later transferred to the Department of Pathology.
Hired in 1971 by the Director of Surgical Pathology, Dr. Joseph Eggleston, and Histology Supervisor, Donald Myers as a laboratory aide, Miss Mary remembers “doing everything, whatever needed to be done.” She quickly learned to change the tissue processors, file paraffin blocks and glass slides, and on occasion, she helped out in the staining of slides. In 1971, the file room was in the basement of the Pathology Building, next to Autopsy. As “a young Miss Mary,” she remembers being afraid to go down to the file room!
Many of our attending pathologists were residents during Miss Mary’s tenure, including Drs. Epstein, Hamilton, Hruban, Mann, Racusen and Ronnett, just to name a few of them! Miss Mary is a great cook and is well known for her sweet potato pies, lasagna, dirty rice, and her potato salad. She was married to the late William White for over 40 years. They have two daughters, Vanessa and Tanja.
Miss Mary was always ready with her beautiful smile and a happy word. We certainly will miss her presence and wish her all the best life has to offer!
