Dr. Peter Burger was awarded a Lifetime Achievement Award at the SNO annual meeting in Montreal. Over the last 35 years, Peter Burger has made a wide range of contributions to the field of neuro-oncology. He served as chairman of the Pediatric Oncology Group pathology review committee for brain tumors from 198l-2000, and has also been involved with numerous other brain tumor groups as an expert neuropathology consultant or medical advisor. He was the first neuropathologist to describe a wide range of tumor subtypes, including the pilomyxoid astrocytoma, chordoid glioma, angiocentric glioma, anaplastic medulloblastoma, ETANTR, and papillary craniopharyngioma. As an engaging speaker, he has given 258 invited or honorary lectures around the globe. As an author, he has published over 400 original papers and review articles. Their impact is evidenced by the fact that 102 of these have been cited at least 50 times, and 38 were cited 100 times or more. He also played a key role in generating all three editions of the World Health Organization classification for CNS tumors, and influences countless pathologists, as well as others associated in the field of neuro-oncology, thru his many textbooks.
