Those six words, The Patricia Charache, M.D. Conference Room, are very meaningful to many people in our Department and throughout Johns Hopkins Medicine. Dr. Patricia Charache was on the faculty of the School of Medicine and a leader in the Department for many decades.
Dr. Pat, as she was known, made enormous contributions during her lifetime to the fields of microbiology, infectious disease, and patient safety. Many faculty and staff recall meetings in the Meyer B105 conference room, chaired by or attended by Dr. Charache.
Dr. Charache passed away in September of 2015. Her legacy is part of the fabric of Johns Hopkins and now we have a beautiful conference room named after Dr. Pat, “The Patricia Charache, M.D. Conference Room.” On October 30, 2017, the Meyer B105 conference room was officially renamed and dedicated to the memory of Dr. Charache. Dr. Charache’s husband of 62 years, Samuel Charache, M.D., their daughter Barbara Charache Coleman, and granddaughter Deborah Coleman Selis were present for this special event.
Opening remarks about Dr. Charache were given by Dr. Hruban, the director of the Pathology Department, followed by Dr. Karen Carroll, the director of the Microbiology Division, who fondly spoke of Dr. Charache, and lastly, Dr. Charache’s husband, Professor Emeritus Samuel Charache, M.D., made everyone laugh with his anecdotes.
Special thanks to Ame’ Maters, Microbiology manager, who came up with the idea of renaming the conference room in honor of Dr. Charache and for her work to make this vision a reality.
