The Spotlight Shines on Dr. Jennifer Bynum!

Dr. Jennifer Bynum is the Michael J. Borowitz Fellow in Hematopathology.

Dr. Bynum was born and raised in Jackson, Tennessee, and from a young age pursued interests in both music and medicine. She earned a Bachelor of Music Education from Florida State University in Tallahassee and taught elementary music and band for five years before earning her M.D. from the University of Alabama at Birmingham. After medical school, Dr. Bynum completed a residency in anatomic and clinical pathology here at Johns Hopkins Hospital, where she also served as chief resident from 2016-2017.

When asked what she likes best about the field of Hematopathology, Jennifer says, “I enjoy the overlap between anatomic and clinical pathology and appreciate the close working relationships that are developed among pathologists and hematologist/oncologists as we diagnose and care for many of the sickest patients in the hospital.”

She will continue in her training during the next academic year with a fellowship in molecular pathology, as the diversity and clinical implications of molecular testing are ever-expanding in number and importance.

Dr. Bynum’s published research has focused on refining best practices for the use of flow cytometry and other testing in clinical practice, and she has also done a small series of projects looking at molecular methods for studying abnormal concepti.

Jennifer enjoys spending time with her husband and their three young daughters, playing the piano and clarinet, and reading.
